Frances Newman continues that painterly tradition of British urban realism extending back through the Kitchen Sink painters of the 195Os to the early twentieth century Camden Town Group around Walter Sickert. - David Buckman,  Author, Dictionary of Artists Working in Britain.

... impassioned, beautifully observed drawings...  - Nicholas Usherwood Galleries Magazine

Frances Newman, was born in Cheltenham in September 1963, educated at Convent of St Francis de Sales. She obtained her BA in Fine Art at Middlesex University and her MA in drawing at Camberwell College of Art.

In 2008 Frances exhibited a series of drawings she created  whilst she was artist in residence at London's University College London Hospital (UCLH). The exhibition, titled Scene Unseen II, was held at the Hospital's Euston Road 'Street Gallery' through May - July. The exhibition was accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with essays by Ron Heisler, Eric Rimmington and Cecily Sash. Follow this link to view catalogue online.

Frances has exhibited regularly since 1998 in both public and private galleries. In 2005 she was short-listed for the Arts Council funded living memorial to Ken Saro-Wiwa and her work was included in the recent Tate Britain's exhibition 'Drawing From Turner' . She exhibited with the Stables Gallery in 2007 and was artist in residence at UCLH from 2006 to 2008. Her full CV can be seen at www.francesnewman.com

Frances has written of her work: 'my practice is centred on drawing and painting; however I am multi-disciplined and have made collage, installation work and sculpture.  The common thread of my work is that of humanity, the plight of the ordinary person, reflecting upon the frequently overlooked and all too often glibly dismissed harsh reality of modern living.
