Sheila Girling was born in Birmingham and studied at the Slade school and at the Royal Academy Schools during the 1950s. Her work has a strong sense of place. Sheila began to experiment with collage during a visit to Barcelona in 1983; her pictures were composed from previously painted fragments of canvas, secured in place and then repainted and glazed to create a rich textures. The landscapes of Canada and Dorset are favourite subjects. Exhibited in London, including Francis Graham-Dixon Gallery, New York, Hamburg and Canada, having solo shows in Edmonton and Calgary in 1978. Sheila lives in Camden, London with her husband Anthony Caro.
